The Crested Gecko Diet

The beauty of the crested gecko diet is that it is extremely simple and convenient. There are staple full meal replacement powder (MRP) commercial powders available that provide nutritious crested gecko food. There are two that I will discuss here as they are tried and true, tested by thousands of crested gecko owners with success.

In addition to the CGD powder, this frugivorous lizard will like gut-loaded feeder insects a couple of times a week (although they can thrive without) and will also enjoy an occasional treat of non-citrus fruits.

If you do not want to deal with feeder insects, you do not have to!

While there are many different MRP powders on the market, there are only two that I recommend to be used as a staple. The other powder offerings out there can be used in a rotation style to keep things interesting, but stick to these two as the staples – Repashy and Pangea. There are enough flavors between these two brands to keep your crestie interested!

You can mix these powders up fresh each time or create a batch that will keep in the fridge for 7 days max.

Part of providing the proper crested gecko care is to give them the best possible diet.

Repashy Crested Gecko Diet

Repashy is one of the best crested gecko diets on the market. They have quite a few formulas that are suitable for a crested gecko, so you can provide a variety of flavors in the feeding rotation. What’s nice is Repashy comes in jars rather than bags which is a nice touch.

Feeding Directions – Mix 1 part of powder to 2-3 parts water. Go for a nice and thick consistency. Replace every 24-72 hours. Feed 3-5 times a week

Pangea Crested Gecko Diet

Pangea is the other best crested gecko diet MRP on the market. The Pangea brand provides a bunch of different flavors to please even the pickiest of crested geckos.

Feeding Directions – Mix 1 part powder to 2-3 parts water. Go for a thick consistency (if your gecko doesn’t take to it, you can try a thinner texture). Replace every 48-72 hours. Here’s the thing, crested geckos eat fermented fruit in the wild, so they may be more willing to eat after the food has aged for 24-48 hours. Feed 3-5 times a week.

When it’s nearing lights out time, check the food and if it’s too dry, add some more dechlorinated water to bring it back to an edible texture.

Once opened, these packs are good for 6 months in a cool area and up to a year in the fridge.

Live Feeders

While not mandatory, it is preferred to have live feeders like crickets and dubia roaches included in the crested gecko diet plan not only for more nutrition, but stimulation for the gecko as well. In addition to the powder, they can be fed feeders two times per week. Make sure they are gut loaded and remove any feeders that they do not eat as they can be a nuisance (mainly crickets).

Fresh Fruits

While the crested gecko diet powder will be your staple feed, you can also treat your gecko to some fruits. Here are some popular fruit choices for crested geckos. Use sparingly and mash up the fruit either by thumb, fork or using a food processor.

Water

Always provide a fresh water dish, changed daily. What you may come to find is that your crested gecko prefers the water drops from the mistings you provide. You can find them licking drops off of the sides of the vivarium or off of plant leaves. You can use a spray bottle or a full blown mister.

Crested Gecko Feeding Schedule Example

Here’s an example of what I feed my crested gecko. I switch between Repashy and Pangea weekly. I create a new mix or refresh with water a few minutes before lights out.

MondayPangea Fruit Mix With Insects
TuesdayAdd water and remix. Replace if all has been consumed
WednesdayPangea Fruit Mix With Insects
ThursdayAdd water and remix. Replace if all has been consumed
FridayPangea Fruit Mix Banana and Apricot

A lot of us have different ways we go about feeding our crested gecko, but you cannot go wrong with the meal replacement powder diets offered by Repashy and Pangea.
